Planning to raise worms? You must already know that worms are absolutely good for gardens as they help to aerate the soil by burrowing and what they drop called castings are excellent as fertilizer. You need to get a continuous supply of worm castings to keep the soil fertilized and to do this you need to also have a continuous supply of worms. The best thing to do is start your own worm farm. It costs nothing and hardly demands much of your time and effort but actually is highly rewarding because in due time you will be having so much worms that you will actually selling them to others for a nice sum of money.
If you intend to start a worm farm of your own then you need to follow certain instructions so that you are successful in your venture. Use only the big Red worms or Tiger worms which are available in most plant nurseries. They do not cost much and this is your initial investment. What worms need are food scrapings and moisture to grow. One important instruction is to keep your worm farm dark, cool and moist always. Worms live underground away from sunlight so keep your worm bin covered with thick newspapers or Hessian or you can even place another bin to cover the dust bin in which your worms are breeding. Keep your bin covered or they will just wriggle away. Worms love moisture so you need to keep spraying fresh water at regular intervals to keep your worm farm moist all the time. Just make sure that you do not add too much water as this might even kill them, just sufficient to keep it moist. Worms love to eat all the time and that is their only hobby. So you need to provide them with a good diet of food scrapings. Do not give them onions and citrus as they do not like the smell of these and will leave your worm farm. Make sure to have the food scraps cut into tiny pieces as worms do not have teeth. Worms love hair, dirt, egg shells, paper, leaves, soaked and shredded pizza boxes and fruit and vegetable scrapings except the two mentioned earlier. Do not supply meat as this would lead to maggots developing in the worm farm.
