Worm Castings

Worms have become a great past time for many as it is a very simple way to make some extra money without having to put much investment or effort to maintain a worm farm. Everyone now prefers to buy organic products as all produce which have been grown with synthetic fertilizers have been found to cause various diseases.

The best way to get organic fertilizer is from worms. Worms have been producing natural nutrient rich fertilizer down the ages ever since God created them. They have been feeding on dead leaves, rotten fruits and vegetables and even animal droppings especially these animals which eat only leaves and fodder.

Worms are found breeding naturally under the ground where it is dark, the temperature cool and the soil moist, just the ideal conditions for   breeding. They are not fond of light and tend to move away to places which are darker.

These worms digest all the dried leaves and rotten vegetables, fruits and animal droppings and digest them. After digesting the scraps they in turn leave behind droppings which are known as worm castings. Worm casting is also known as worm compost, vermin cast, worm humus or manure.

The earthworm in the soil breaks down the organic matter in the food which it eats and leaves behind an end product which is the worm castings. This worm casting or vermicompost as it is normally referred to is highly rich in nutrients and is natural fertilizer for the soil and it also helps to condition the soil.

Ever since man has been growing food from the soil he has only depended on these worms for making his soil rich. It was only much recently that people resorted to chemical fertilizers which in turn were harmful to the human body causing lots of diseases.

This method of producing worm castings is known as vermicomposting. Pants are known to grow well with the help of worm castings. The soil remains free of odour and this also helps to prevent the plants from any diseases.

The worms help to break down the soil nutrients into smaller quantities and this in turn gets easily absorbed by the root hairs directly into the plants. Worm castings help to stabilize the soil as the water retention capacity of the soil gets increased. Worm castings are known to be high in minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, nitrogen ect.
