Worm Harvester
Worm breeding or Vermiculture has become very popular among many people who have taken it up not only as a hobby but also as a small business. Of course there are some who are doing it on a large scale as worm castings and worm tea are in great demand as organic farming is also becoming very popular these days. As a matter of fact worm breeding has been acknowledged as a legitimate industry. Worm breeding is being practiced as an industry.
Worm are averse to sunlight, too much of moisture, and extreme temperatures. They love food scraps in any form and tend to move towards them after they have completed gorging on the scraps they are presently eating. Most people breed worms in worm bins r a worm factory. Once the worms begin to feed on the food scraps they then convert the food scraps into worm castings or compost. The worm compost has to be separated from the worms themselves and for this one needs to use a worm harvester. Using the basic idea that worms hate sunlight, moisture and heat or cold and their knack to move away in search of fresh food you can easily deice a method to harvest the compost. But for those who are not very creative there 2 trusted methods which help in harvesting compost from the worms. The first is the Dump and Hand sort method where you place a plastic sheet either on the floor or table and dump all the contents of the worm bin and make cones out of the worm compost and then point a bright light at the cones. As you scrape of the layers of compost you will find the worms beneath and you can separate them easily. The other method is the Divide and harvest method where you move the old bedding, castings and worms in the bin to a side and you prepare fresh bedding with a few scraps. The worms would have moved to the new bedding after a few weeks, now you are ready to harvest the compost.
For those who prefer to harvest using a machine then there is the worm harvester which is a trammel screen which has a rotating cylinder with a screen mesh on its sides. As you rotate the cylinder it helps to separate the worms from the compost and the worms are collected in cones at one end. There are many types of harvesters which are being sold on the internet and it is worth checking them out if you plan to get one.
